Location
Syracuse, NY
Date
February, 2022
Role
Lead Designer
Project type
Scenic Design
The set design depicts an industrial forest where audience members are shrunk down to the size of a squirrel and introduced to the rivalry between gray and red squirrels. The set elements are climbable, allowing the actors to embody the agility and sneakiness of squirrels more effectively.
Oversized everyday objects—such as a barrel of monkeys or a Tiffany & Co. ring box—are repurposed as steps, chairs, and even weapons. This nontraditional use of materials illustrates how squirrels adapt and repurpose human luxuries in unexpected ways.
The contrast from stage right to stage left symbolizes the conflict between the gray and red squirrels, highlighting the socioeconomic differences between their communities. The audience is transported into a world that mirrors their own.
