Cabaret
Location
Syracuse, NY
Date
February, 2023
Role
Lead Designer
Project type
Scenic Design
The tragedy of Cabaret is centered among many things, including the loss of individuality. In the design of the show, there was a choice for the scenic elements to have a loss of life to help represent the oppression of the Nazi regime.
The Club is set in an abandoned train station that the members of the Cabaret have made into their own space. This space represents who they are as individuals.
As the play continues and moves into Act 2 there is a strong visual difference in the scenic elements. As the influence of the Nazi regime grows the destruction and vandalism of the space increases. The end of the show looks as if there is no club atmosphere left and the audience is left in a truly abandoned train station.
This production of Cabaret is an immersive experience. Audience members will be given the choice to sit on stage at themed tables and chairs to be a part of the action.
